"Which Cables Do I Need to Connect My PC to a TV?"
Despite all the different types of computers, TV, and monitors today, many of them share common audio and video ports to make a PC to TV connection. So if your computer and TV both share common connectors, then your job becomes easier when using the correct cable while your computer’s audio and video adjustments are set correctly.
There are many different types of common connection and you may have to refer to your TV documentation for more detailed information and troubleshooting. Here’s an outline of the many common connection types you can use to
Most Popular Video Connections…
VGA: This type of connection is called Video Graphics Array, which is a 15-pin video connector and commonly available on almost every Windows-based computer nowadays. These VGA ports, in most cases, are color coded blue and don’t offer high quality as does HDMI or DVI connections. However, making a VGA connection is more commonly available and can work with either a SD (standard definition) or HD (high definition) television that uses a VGA port. HDMI and DVI: Here lies the newest and perhaps the best current cable connection for your HD television. It offers a HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface). Sometimes high-end video cards on computers will have HDMI ports on HD televisions. Many computers, and in many cases, MAC computers may come with DVI (Digital Visual Interface) ports which permits a connection to your television’s HDMI port when using an HDMI-to-DVI cable/adaptor. S-Video: This means separate video which is a round 4-pin video connector and can be found on most SD and HD TV-sets. Some computer video cards with have S-Video and many times will be color coded yellow. The most common use for this type of connection comes when connecting DVD players to SD TV-sets. And this connection will work when using a desktop or laptop computer with an S-Video port. For more information and prices, see all All Video/Audio Cables And Adaptors
Composite/RCA: Often at times, many TV-sets will come with round yellow, white, and red input ports to connect a video camera or DVD player. Consequently, these colored connectors are also known as composite or RCA ports collectively. For instance, the red and white ports are for audio, and the yellow port is for video. While some computers offer video cards with RCA connections, adaptors may be available for you to convert your computer’s video signal via RCA input on your television set. If your computer doesn’t have integrated audio/video output, it may have an HDMI port. What this means is you will have to run separate cables in order to get both video and audio working properly on your TV-set. However if your PC does have an HDMI port, then you can get the audio/video transmitted through a single connection.
In order to hear the audio coming from your PC through your TV, you must connect an audio cable coming from your TV-set to the audio-out or if you prefer an headphone jack on your PC. In addition, you can connect your external speakers to your computer and listen to the audio.
The simplest way to do this is using an audio cable with a 1/8-inch stereo jack at one end and white RCA connectors on the other end. As for computers with high-end audio cards with an optical audio or maybe a digital coaxial audio port, you can connect a 5.1-enabled stereo receiver--if you wanted full surround sound. However, keep in mind, they may not always connect to most TV-sets.
How To Optimize Your Audio Output...
Optimizing your computer’s volume settings: With the video player, simply click/drag your volume indicator to decrease/increase the volume level. You can also check your main volume including the wave volume in your computer’s OS (operating system).
If you want to avoid distortion, put the volume setting around 80% of the maximum volume on your PC. And be aware that your PC volume isn’t muted.
Optimizing for 5.1 surround sound: Know whether you are using an optical or digital coaxial connection for your audio. Make certain to verify your computer’s settings so you are ready for 5.1 surround sound. (Reminder - not all videos are available with surround.)
Steps…
1. Go to your Control Panel on your computer
2. Open Sounds and Audio Devices
3. See Volume tab in the Speaker settings section, then click the Advanced button
4. On the Speakers tab, select 5.1 surround sound speakers.
The above information should answer the question, "Which cables do I need to connect my pc to a tv."
Please Note: Make sure your Speaker setup isn’t set to a mono setting. You can change the setting to a stereo setting even if some videos encoded with 5/1 surround sound experience low center channel sound with a mono setting.
